LEADING
RESEARCH PROJECTS INDEPENDENTLY AND AS A TEAM LEADER
Mesganaw
has spearheaded various research projects through MG Consultancy, offering actionable
recommendations to a range of organizations.
·
In 2014, one such project focused on "The needs
of soft skills training to minimize the performance gaps of Ethiopian workers,
in the case of Bole Lemi industrial park." The outcomes of this research led
to the creation of soft skills training manuals, underscored the significance
of soft skills in the workplace, encouraged organizations to prioritize soft
skills training, influenced the government to incorporate soft skills training
immediately post-recruitment in upcoming industrial parks like Hawassa and
Mekele, and assisted foreign direct investors in optimizing worker management
and boosting production efficiency.
·
In 2015,
Mesganaw led a national research initiative for the Ethiopian National Election
Board, funded by UNDP, on "Post-Election Evaluation." The insights
gleaned from this study enabled the board to refine its processes for future
political party elections and report its performance to donor organizations.
Additionally, in the same year, Mesganaw served as the lead research consultant
for World Vision Ethiopia's research project on "Effectiveness of Youth
Employment Interventions to Enhance opportunities for Decent work. The path
root of employees from Arbaminch to Addis Ababa Gulele area," contracted
by HESA International Consultancy & Training plc. Under this collaboration,
Mesganaw delivered a preliminary proposal, devised methodologies, trained data
collectors, oversaw data collection and quality, and analyzed the gathered data.
·
Furthermore, in 2017, the research findings on soft
skill training in Ethiopia conducted by consulting firms such as Center for
Africa Leadership Development (CALD) Consulting firm, SAK Consultancy and
Management, and Investment Consulting have proven to be beneficial for donor
organizations like Development Alternative Ink (DAI) and Enterprise Partner.
These findings have facilitated the implementation of soft skills training
projects in various industrial parks across the country. Additionally, MG
Consultancy has utilized these findings to develop and publish a comprehensive
manual for organizational-level soft skills training of trainers. The donor
organizations have also translated the manual from Amharic to English and
distributed it internationally to attract potential investors interested in our
industrial parks, thereby addressing labor-related issues. Moreover, the
selected consulting firms have received the first manual for their services and
further development of their own manuals.
·
Moreover, in 2018, efforts were made to enhance labor
conditions by addressing constraints in collaboration with shoe factories and
tanneries located in Addis Ababa, Oromia, and Tigray regions. The research
findings and raw data have greatly contributed to the program implementation of
donor organizations and have enriched MG Consultancy's knowledge and
understanding of the sector, supporting its business journey.
·
In 2019, Save the Children International conducted
financial activities related to migration management, coordination, partnership
mechanisms, reporting accountability, and documentation to enhance integrated
services for refugee camps and host communities in the Somali regional state.
The findings from this initiative supported efficient project implementation by
Save the Children International, as well as benefiting host community
representatives and local government officials. Following the research
findings, Mesganaw organized a training session for participants from refugee
camp administrators, host community representatives, government officials,
local and international non-governmental organizations, and donor organizations
such as Save the Children and Danish Refugee Council. The training focused
mainly on Comprehensive Refugee Response Frameworks (CRRF).
·
Additionally, in 2019, Mesganaw conducted a research
project in collaboration with the Ethiopian Investment Commission Hawassa
Industrial Park branch on "The impact of indigenous knowledge and
practices on workers' soft skills for improved work performance in the Hawassa
Industrial Park catchment areas." The findings from this research
supported the training delivery of MG Consultancy and assisted industrial
managements in handling worker conflicts, enhancing employee motivation packages,
and reducing worker turnover rates in specific factories.
·
In 2019, Mesganaw spearheaded the Save the Children
research project titled "Assessment on adapting and developing youth
employability skills in Amhara and Somali Regional states in Ethiopia." The
results of this study were instrumental in creating a curriculum and conducting
Training of Trainers (ToT) sessions for Save the Children headquarters, field
RESET project staff, government officials, and other non-governmental
organizations involved in similar initiatives.
·
Furthermore, in 2019 Mesganaw conducted a research
study on "Workers' diagnostics to understand challenges in the recruitment
process and living conditions of employees at Hawassa Industrial Park for
improved performance." The findings and recommendations from this research
greatly benefited Development Alternative Ink (DAI) in effectively implementing
its projects and enhancing MG Consultancy's understanding of the sector.
·
Also in 2019, Mesganaw led a training needs assessment
for the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in collaboration with UNDP.
This project focused on identifying skill gaps within EHRC staff in alignment
with the commission's constitutional mandate. Following the assessment, EHRC
and UNDP collaborated on local and international projects to enhance the
capacity of EHRC staff based on the identified needs.
·
In 2020, a labor market and potential partners
assessment was carried out for Save the Children International Ethiopia
Migration Program in Addis Ababa and North Wollo zone. The aim was to address
livelihood-related factors contributing to unsafe irregular migration and to
prepare migrants and refugee youth for decent employment opportunities. The
findings from this assessment were instrumental in reprogramming the project
plan and facilitating the effective implementation of the program for the donor
organization.
·
In the same year 2020, the Ethiopian Center for
Development conducted a national research on the preparation of aptitude tools
for workers in selected sectors in Ethiopia. The findings led to the
development of aptitude test tools for workers in the garment, hotel service,
kitchen operation, woodwork, and metalwork sectors.
·
In 2021, Mesganaw conducted an in-depth research for
the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) on a comprehensive assessment of vocational
skills training in the Gambela region, focusing on refugee camps such as
Nguenyyiel, Terkidi, Kule, and Jewi. The findings provided valuable insights
for the donor organization and enhanced the researcher's understanding of
technical and vocational training issues among Ethiopian refugees and host
communities.
·
Similarly, in 2021, Mesganaw led a national research
project for the Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD) on the
feasibility study of the proposed Skills for Knowledge, Inclusions,
Livelihoods, and Living Support (SKILLS) project in twenty countries across
Ethiopia. The findings, which involved sampling twenty cities in the country,
shed light on the impact of training facilities on persons with disabilities
and motivated further action on disability issues in Ethiopia.
