ETDPA and MG Consultancy recently unveiled the preliminary findings of their research titled “The Pursuit of Professional Association in Ethiopia: Practice and Problems”. This presentation, held on January 9, 2025, at the Authority for Civil Society Organizations (ACSO) hall, brought together key stakeholders, including ACSO higher officials, professional association leaders, and academics. During the event, participants engaged in an in-depth review of the data collection process, research methodology, and the initial findings. Their feedback, including valuable insights and recommendations, will be incorporated into the final report to enhance the study’s relevance and accuracy.
This research represents a groundbreaking effort as the first comprehensive study focusing solely on the practices and challenges faced by professional associations in Ethiopia. A significant revelation of the research is the rich history of professional associations in Ethiopia, which dates back nearly a century. December 12, 2024, marked the 99th anniversary of the establishment of the country’s first professional association—a milestone that surprised many participants who were unaware of its enduring legacy. This long-standing history underscores the potential and resilience of these organizations despite various challenges. The findings highlight the urgent need to address the gaps and barriers hindering their progress, ensuring that professional associations play a pivotal role in advancing the professional and societal development of Ethiopia.
